About the Library

library lobby

When I arrive, I will walk through a lobby and then into the library.

The lobby has a frame showing a list of events for the week.

RFID self-service machines

These are the self service machines.

I can use them to borrow or return books.

They are to the right of me when I enter the library.

Staff ID lanyard

I can also ask someone who works at the library for help.

Everyone who works at the library wears a lanyard with their name.

Hello desk

Library staff are often at the ‘hello’ desk but can also be in other parts of the library.

I will know who they are because they will be wearing a lanyard and a name badge.

Children's area

Laindon library is quite big with lots of shelves of books. I can find the children’s books right at the back.

Literacy Area

This is the Children's area.

I can find the Literacy Corner here.

Colouring activities

There are treasure trails and colouring activities.

Desk and chairs in library

I can sit on the chairs or on the carpet.

Non-fiction books

On the shelves, I can find story books and non-fiction or ‘fact’ books.

Learner and older reader picture books on shelf

There are books for learner readers and for older readers.

Picture books

There are also lots of picture books and board books too.

Child colouring while sitting at a desk

The library is often quiet but sometimes it can be noisy!

It can be noisy if the library is holding an event like our weekly children’s Rhymetime session.

Literacy area

If it’s too noisy, the library staff can help me find somewhere quieter.

The Literacy area at the back of the library is usually one of the quietest places in the library.

I can sit here on the comfy chair or the carpet.

How I become a member of the Library

Hello desk

I can ask someone at the ‘hello’ desk how to become a member of the library.

If there is no one at the desk, I don’t need to worry because someone will come along soon to help me if I wait there.

library card

The library staff will ask me to tell them my name, address and date of birth and then they can give me a library card.

library staff lanyard

I will know if someone works in the library because they will be wearing a lanyard and a name badge.

I can ask them to show me where things are.

When I visit the Library

Self-service machines

When I have found a book to take home, I need to use the self-service machines to borrow it.

They are near the hello desk.

Self-service machine screen view

The staff can show me how to borrow the book and tell me when I need to bring it back to the library.

They can also show me how to return my book when I have read it.

Library computers

The library also has some computers.

I can log on with my library card to use them.

library catalogue computer

If I can’t find what I want in my library, I might be able to order it from another library.

I can ask the staff to show me how to search the library catalogue and order books.

Library exit

When I have finished, I will leave the library.
